Our hometown is known as the Durian and Chocolate Capital of the Philippines. Over 100 dialects are spoken throughout the Philippines, and you can hear almost all of them spoken in Davao. There is an old wives’ tale about visitors of Davao who ate durian once and haven’t left lest they miss out on the delectable fruit. The fruit smells pungent but tastes like heaven. So batchmates, Beware: you might not go back to your adoptive country if you eat durian again by chance.

Sixty years after San Pedro Street was burned down in 1963, the original B69ers San Pedro Boys reunited at Cafe Julieta on March 7, 2023.

It all started when Dario M came to pay his last respects to the late Caesar Samson. At the wake, Dario M met the elder sister of Paddy S, Atchie Leddy Samson. They talked about a wide range of topics, from the locations of stores in San Pedro Street to our neighbors’ names, favorite restaurants, etc. Then came Willy V and Rey C just right after Dario M left. On the next occasion, before we proceeded to the wake of Larry B, Paddy S mentioned to Bebot A that their store (Ang Mahunit) in San Pedro was across from my parent’s store (U & I Store). Finally, at the Despedida Party came Dante D.
Another highlight for that evening was the meeting of Jun S and Paddy S. In 1968 (third year HS), had a boxing match (fist fight) inside our classroom during recces time for no apparent reason except “Kantiawan Lang,” led by Rudy Carr and other classmates.
Per Jun S, we last met on a Ferry Boat ride from Zamboanga City to Basilan City in the late 70s or early 80s. I am still trying to recall that.
